Did you know newborns only have 5-14 days when they're naturally posable?
After days 14, their nervous systems wake up and they start fighting those peaceful poses that look so natural online. What seems like a small timing difference could change what's possible in your session. I have had older babies come into the studio and we always get beautiful photos, but often times it takes a little more patience and they're not able to fit into the props or bend into the typical, classic poses most families want.
With a 10-day-old, I can gently guide them into those classic poses you see online. Hands under the chin, curled on their side, peaceful sleeping positions. They're still so used to being cramped in the womb that these positions actually feel comfortable.
They'll settle right in and stay there while I adjust my lighting and capture multiple shots.
But a 3-week-old? Definitely more of a challenge, which I'm always up for!
Their legs straighten out, arms start flailing. I'll spend 10 minutes carefully positioning them, and the second I step back to take the shot... they've moved completely.
Instead of that peaceful 2-hour session parents expect, it becomes this careful dance of waiting for just the right moment.
The biology is simple but most parents have no idea it exists. After 14 days, babies start to become alert and aware of their surroundings. Those dreamy "sleepy baby" poses? They start resisting them naturally a little more as time goes on.
I keep my studio at 80-85 degrees (it gets toasty!) because recreating that womb environment is the only way to keep babies calm during posing - especially when they're not swaddled.
Your baby is only this tiny once. The timing window is much smaller than people realize.
Booking at 8 days old versus 18 days old can mean the difference between getting those classic newborn portraits and spending most of the session trying to soothe a fussy baby who just wants to stretch out.
So if you're looking to book a studio newborn session, book as soon as possible! I always book due dates weeks/months in advance and then we change the date as needed! Feel free to reach out with any questions!
